Learn to hit a tennis slice backhand. A slice is a stroke that creates backspin on the ball and bounces low. This is the exact opposite of the topspin shot that spins forward and bounces higher. The slice backhand is a good shot to hit to mix up shot selection and the speed of the point.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Have your hitting partner hit to your backhand to practice your slice backhand.

  2. Step 2

Turn your body sideways like you would if you were hitting a regular backhand. Start the racquet from around the height of your shoulder and swing downward and forward at a low angle. Make contact with the ball in front of you.

  3. Step 3

After making contact with the ball, level out the angle of the racquet so more spin can be generated. Extend through the stroke so the slice stays low and deep.

  4. Step 4

Keep practicing until you have a feel for the shot. This is a good shot to hit if you are approaching the net on a short, low ball. It is also good to hit if you are trying to mix up your shot selection.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't get frustrated if you are not getting it right away. Tennis is a sport of patience and practice. You will get the feel soon enough.
  • Watch the professionals play and try to imitate.
