Not all iPods are simply for listening to music. Several models give you the option of viewing video files on the device. You can acquire video files for your video-enabled iPod directly from iTunes. You can also add videos that are saved on your computer to the device. In order to sync a video not downloaded from iTunes to your iPod, you first need to add that video file to the iTunes library on your computer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Open iTunes.

  2. Step 2

Click "File" to add the video file you wish to put on your iPod into the iTunes library. Choose the "Add File to Library" option and a window will open. Scroll through the listed folders until you find the one containing the video you want to put onto your iPod. Open this folder and highlight the video. Then click "Open." If the video is already in iTunes, you can skip to the next step.

  3. Step 3

Plug your iPod into the computer. Once iTunes recognizes the device, the program will list the name of the iPod under "Devices."

  4. Step 4

Select the proper link for your video on the left side of iTunes. For example, if you've downloaded a TV show from iTunes and wish to put it on your iPod, you would click "TV Shows." Video files you add to iTunes manually will be listed under the "Movies" option. Once you click one of the links, the video files in that category will be listed.

  5. Step 5

Highlight the video you want to put on the iPod.

  6. Step 6

Drag that video file over the name of the iPod (listed under "Devices"). The video will be added to the iPod and a message will appear at the top of iTunes informing you that the device is being updated. When that message goes away, the process has finished, and you may unplug the device.

Tips & Warnings
  • Not all video files will play on an iPod. The video format must be .mov, .mp4, .m4v or another MPEG format in order to add the video to an iPod. All video files acquired from iTunes can be added to any iPod with video capabilities.
