How to Design a Wedding Banner

A wedding banner is a lovely addition to the bridal decorations you may be considering for your ceremony. Many churches have stands designed to hold banners with biblical or inspirational messages. If not, a flagpole and its stand can act as your base. However, if the church or wedding facility doesn't provide a wedding banner, consider designing your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the message. You won't have space for many words if you want them to be legible from a distance, so keep it brief. Perhaps you'll say, "The greatest of these is love," or you'll feature the couple's names and the wedding date.

    • 2

Lay out the message on a sheet of tracing paper along with any images or symbols you would like to include. Be sure to draw the letters and symbols to scale.

    • 3

Draw patterns for each letter and symbol on pieces of tracing paper. Make these patterns the actual size that they will appear on the banner.

    • 4

Prepare the background fabric by cutting it to the desired size, leaving an extra ½ inch on the sides and bottom for the hem. Give yourself an additional 2 inches at the top of the banner to make a sleeve for the dowel rod. Turn and stitch your hems so that they are neat.

    • 5

Prepare the gold fabric by ironing the fusible webbing to its back. Follow the webbing's directions carefully, as each brand is slightly different.

    • 6

Cut out your letters and symbols in the gold fabric by using your paper patterns and X-acto knife. Iron the letters and symbols into place.

    • 7

Paint the dowel rod gold and slip it through the sleeve at the top of the banner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add the wedding colors to the banner's design to integrate it into the total look of the wedding. Print a picture of the couple on photo fabric to include in the banner.
