Things You'll Need:
- Computer with free USB port
- USB modem
-
Step 1
Log off the computer and shut down the system before connecting the wireless USB modem.
-
Step 2
Remove the protective end cap from the USB wireless modem. The cap keeps dust and dirt from getting inside the modem and protects the wire pins from becoming bent. Always place the protective cap back on the USB jack when the modem is not in use.
-
Step 3
Insert the USB wireless modem into a free USB port on the computer. The plug will only install in one direction, so take care not to force the plug into the USB port. Some USB wireless modems have an on-off button on the edge; press this button to activate the modem.
-
Step 4
Power up the computer and wait for the "new hardware detected" message to display on the monitor. This enables your computer to recognize the device so that you can connect to the Internet. If the message does not display, click the Start button in the lower left-hand corner of the computer screen, then choose My Computer. Select the USB wireless modem from the list of peripherals connected to your computer. If the wireless modem still does not display in the list of devices under My Computer, power down your system and reboot the computer.
-
Step 5
Check the power of the USB wireless modem by locating a small red light on the unit. If the light is glowing, the modem is being powered by your computer. USB wireless modems do not require batteries. Instead, they are powered from your laptop or desktop computer.
-
Step 6
Launch an Internet browser on your computer. If you are at a coffee shop or other location offering free Internet access, you will probably be prompted to enter a code to use the wireless network. Type the code exactly as it appears on your screen into the blank field. You may be prompted to type the code into a second field for verification. Then click OK or simply press the Enter key to be connected wirelessly to the Internet.
