How to Access My Home PC From Anywhere

While there are several VNC (virtual network computing) server and client software packages for remotely accessing your PC, opening a port on your computer can be a very risky undertaking. You would need the client software on each computer you used to access your own (or carry a jump drive with the software on it). This option is for advanced users. For those of us with limited or no networking experience, services like LogMeIn are the best way to remotely access your home PC or Mac safely. Because it uses the Internet as a platform, it only needs to be installed on the computer you wish to be able to access.

Using LogMeIn to Remotely Access Your Computer

1. Go to <a href="https://secure.logmein.com/US/home.aspx">LogMeIn</a> and create an account. You may choose either a free version or LogMeIn Pro, which has features such as printing and file transfer capability.

2. Download and install the LogMeIn software. It is a very quick and easy download that takes only about two minutes. The software is compatible with both Windows and Mac OS X.

3. Sign into your LogMeIn account from another computer and enjoy the ease of remote access.

Tips & Warnings

• Be sure to choose a strong password for your LogMeIn account and keep it private. It is your only defense against someone roaming freely through your computer files.
