Replacing the laminate on kitchen counter tops is an affordable way to give your kitchen a face lift. Old, worn laminate can make your kitchen appear dirty and dated. Installing laminate counter tops is a straightforward process that is easy to complete. Before you can install new laminate sheets in your kitchen, you must first determine the amount of laminate required to resurface your kitchen counter tops.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Framing square
  1. Step 1

Sketch the layout of your kitchen on a piece of paper. Clear the counter tops of any obstructions that will hinder your ability to obtain proper measurements.

  2. Step 2

Lay out the length of each laminate sheet on your kitchen sketch as you measure the counter tops. The standard length for a laminate sheet is 4 by 8 feet. Measure the longest counter top first. Place a mark on your sketch roughly where the first sheet will end. On counter tops longer then 8 feet, pay attention to where the sheet seams will fall. Counter tops with a sink, for example will have the seam located in front of the sink to make the seam less noticeable.

  3. Step 3

Measure the back splash after all the counter tops are measured. Mark the back splash height on your kitchen sketch. You will also need to measure the distance of the top of the back splash and the thickness of the counter top.

  4. Step 4

Total the amount of laminate sheets required to cover your counter tops. When you know the total number of sheets required, you can estimate the amount of adhesive required to glue the laminate sheets to your counter tops.
