How to Tune to Drop C on a Guitar

Different tunings can give a different feel to your song. For instance, blues artists tend to use Open A tuning and Open E tuning frequently. Kurt Cobain almost always had his guitar tuned down half a step and was even sometimes in Drop D flat. Drop C tuning is a very heavy tuning that will sound dark and, if you know how to do it properly, very cool.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Plug your guitar cable into your input jack. Plug the other end into the tuner. Tune to Standard tuning (EADGBe).

  2. Step 2

Start with your sixth string, the low E string, and and slowly turn its tuning knob in the direction that makes it sound lower. Watch your tuner. It should read E flat, then D, then D flat, then C. Once it's in the range of C, tune it as you would normally tune it to E (until the middle light lights up).

  3. Step 3

Repeat step two with the five remaining strings. The A string should be tuned down to G, the D string should be tuned down to C, the G string should be tuned down to F, the B string should be tuned down to A, and the high e string should be tuned down to a C.
