How to Draw a Food Web

A food web shows the paths of consumption and energy flow of an ecosystem.

A food chain is a linear depiction of a path of food consumption. A food web is a more complex representation of the energy flow of an ecosystem, depicting a group of several interconnected food chains. Ecology and environmental biology instructors often ask students to draw the food web for a given system. The key to drawing a successful food web lies in understanding the relationships between the participants of an ecosystem.

Things You'll Need

• List of organisms in an ecosystem

Instructions

1. Identify the organisms found in the ecosystem you want to represent.

2. Write the names of the primary producers at the bottom level of the food web; these typically are plants and/or bacteria.

3. On the next level, write the names of primary consumers, or herbivores, who feed on plant matter.

4. Above the primary consumers, identify the secondary consumers, or carnivores; these organisms eat herbivores.

5. The top-most level consists of tertiary consumers, which are carnivores that eat other carnivores.

6. Include a picture of each organism represented in the food web next to its name.

7. Draw an arrow from each predator to its prey, making sure the arrows indicate the correct direction of energy flow.
