How to Deal With a Boss on a Power Trip

Bosses on power trips can create an uncomfortable workplace, making it difficult for employees to communicate their ideas and perform their daily tasks. Although there is little you can to do to change your boss's behavior, remember that you are in control of your own attitude and work habits.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider the content of your boss's message rather than the tone of his or her voice. Remember that your boss in a position of authority and may have valid requests or concerns, even if he or she voices them aggressively or in a condescending tone of voice.

    • 2

Be assertive, not aggressive. While it may be easy to get defensive when dealing with a boss on a power trip, avoid this temptation. Stand up for yourself if you feel that you are being treated unfairly, but do not try to challenge your boss's authority.

    • 3

Stick to the task at hand. While at work, focus on doing your job to the best of your ability and avoid complaining to co-workers about your boss's shortcomings. Gossiping and criticizing your boss will do nothing to change his or her attitude and may get you in trouble.

    • 4

Report unethical behavior to the appropriate parties. If your boss's power trip becomes abusive or compromises the ethics of the company, report your boss to your human resources department or his or her direct supervisor.
