How to Replace a Leaking Bathroom Faucet

      Turn the water off at the shut valve to the faucet. The shut valve will be located under the sink.

      Use a pair of pliers to disconnect the water supply hoses from the water faucet.

      Use a wrench to remove the retaining nuts under the sink. You will find retaining nuts at each handle and possibly one near the center.

      Lift the old faucet off of the sink. Use a putty knife to scrape off any residual plumber's putty and clean the surface thoroughly.

      Take the old faucet with you to the hardware store. Purchase a new faucet kit that has the same distance between the handles as your current faucet.

      Place the plastic base of the new faucet into place under the faucet body. New kits come with this plastic base to eliminate the need for plumber's putty.

      Insert the new faucet into the holes in the sink. Have a helper hold the faucet in place while you connect it from under the sink.

      Place the washers around the faucet stems and thread the retaining nuts onto each stem until they contact the sink. Use a wrench to tighten the nuts evenly between the two faucet stems. By doing this, you will prevent accidentally damages the porcelain sink.

      Wrap plumber's tape around the threads of the two faucet stems. Connect the water supply hose to the faucet: hot water on the left and the cold water supply on the right. Tighten the hoses with a pair of pliers.

      Turn the water supply back on to the faucet. Check for leaks.
