How to Prepare for the RHIT Exam

The RHIT exam is the required exam for those individuals who want to become registered health information technicians. Registered health information technicians work with confidential patient information, ensuring that records are as complete and accurate as possible. Though it is not required for employment in the field, many hospitals, nursing homes and public health agencies will hire registered technicians before hiring an unregistered recordkeeper. There is a lot of information covered on the RHIT exam, so it's important to be well-prepared before taking it.

Instructions

1. Hold onto your notes from your health information classes. Before becoming RHIT certified, you must complete an associate's degree in health information technology or a closely related field. The RHIT exam is designed to test the information that you have learned in the courses from this program, so any class notes will be useful in studying for the exam.

2. Keep your text books. More than likely, class lectures didn't cover every piece of information that will be on the RHIT exam. The text books from your classes will help fill in the blanks with the information that wasn't covered in classes.

3. Make flashcards. Flashcards can be made for the definitions, laws and processes listed in your text books. You can also buy flashcards that focus on the RHIT exam. These flashcards cover all of the RHIT topics, including patient records, paper forms, pathology reports, diagnostic services, insurance payments, copays, managed care and all of the various types of medical services. If you aren't sure what to expect on the exam, premade RHIT flashcards may be a wise investment.

4. Use a RHIT prep book. Like premade flashcards, RHIT prep books like "Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Exam Preparation" or "Preparation Guide for the RHIA and RHIT Examinations" can guide you through which topics you can expect on the RHIT exam.

5. Take an online prep course. If you are the type of person who needs a little extra guidance or study help, an online preparation course may work well for you. Several colleges and organizations, such as the Ohio Health Information Management Association and Alfred State SUNY College of Technology, offer online courses to help people prepare for the RHIT exam.

6. Take the exam as soon as possible after graduating. The fresher the information from your health information courses is in your mind, the easier it will be to take the RHIT exam.
