How to Get a Donation for a Charity Raffle

Make your raffle a success by targeting the right prize donors.

One of the best ways to raise money for a charitable organization is to hold a raffle. To make money, however, you have to obtain the items you are raffling off with little or no money. If you approach potential businesses and donors correctly, you'll have no problem obtaining prizes.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose establishments that have a history of giving. Perhaps that pet shop down the street has a Saturday puppy day care program that offers half price to busy soccer moms with more than two kids. Such community-oriented businesses may be more willing to donate.

    • 2

Go in person. People usually never answer emails asking for donations because they think they're scams. Go to the establishment and ask for the person in charge. Speak to her directly, explaining in a kind voice exactly who you are and what organization you represent. Make it clear from the start what your mission is and the valuable work your group performs in the community.

    • 3

Have a letter with the organization's letterhead already printed up. The letter should explain the basic information about the charity event. It should also contain information about the group's nonprofit status for tax purposes.

    • 4

Consider offers to purchase merchandise at reduced rates. You can also ask the business's representative if you could buy a specific item at a reduced rate if the company refuses to make a donation.

    • 5

Accept any donation, even if it doesn't seem like much on its own. A few games of free bowling may not have a high monetary value, but throw it together with some plastic toy pins and the DVD "Kingpin" and you've got yourself a themed basket to raffle off.
