Fruit flies are a pain, and it is easy to get a lot of them quickly. Here's a very easy way to trap them and literally throw them out with the trash.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An empty can, jar, disposable cup, or other disposable container
  • A small piece of fruit, such as a banana slice or a mushy strawberry
  • Plastic wrap
  • A Rubber Band
  • A fork
  1. Step 1

Place the small piece of fruit in the bottom of the container you are using.

  2. Step 2

Cover the container with plastic wrap, and secure with the rubber band.

  3. Step 3

Use a fork to poke some small holes in the top of the plastic wrap. Two or three stabs with the fork should do it, but make sure the holes are relatively small.

  4. Step 4

Set the trap on the kitchen counter or wherever the problem area is located. The fruit flies will be attracted to the smell of the fruit in the container and crawl into the holes, but they won't be able to get back out again.

  5. Step 5

After about 24 hours, dispose of the "trap" in your outdoor garbage. If you use a recyclable container, please shake out the fruit flies outside and then rinse out the container and recycle it.

Tips & Warnings
  • The best way to prevent fruit flies from returning is to keep your produce in the refrigerator or other enclosed space, take out your garbage often, and don't leave dirty dishes out or in the sink for long.
