Exchanging Christmas cards each holiday season is a long-standing tradition. But buying Christmas cards can be expensive! Follow these tips to make Christmas cards more affordable.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • old Christmas cards
  • cardstock
  • glue
  • scissors
  • paper
  • fabric
  • photographs
  • stickers
  • glitter
  • lace
  • ribbon
  • scrapping or stamping supplies
  • other embellishments
  1. Step 1

    Recycle Old Cards

Making postcards from old Christmas cards is the best way to save cash. Simply find cards that you have received and cut the fronts to the appropriate size. Add a message, the address and proper postage on the reverse side. According to USPS guidelines, to qualify for the postcard rate, postcards must be between 3½"x5" and 4¼"x6".

  2. Step 2

    Homemade Cards

With a little creativity and simple materials, beautiful cards can be made at home. For cards that will be mailed, go easy on anything that adds weight or bulk. But for cards that will be hand-delivered, the sky's the limit! Using cardstock as the base, glue photographs, paper or fabric cutouts, lace, ribbon, glitter, stickers or anything else you'd like to make your cards festive! Decorative edge scissors and scrapbooking or stamping supplies may be used, as well.

  3. Step 3

    Photo Cards

For a simple option with the personal touch, photo Christmas cards are available at a reasonable cost. Check local stores that offer photo-processing services, such as Costco or Wal-Mart, or order online.

  4. Step 4

    Send Cards by Email

Write a Christmas letter or create a card on your computer to send by email. Use pictures and convert to PDF for family and friends to whom an email Christmas greeting is appropriate.

  5. Step 5

    Buy On Sale

After the holidays, Christmas cards are available at up to 90% off. Shop the sales and stock up for the coming years.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get the kids into the act! Kids love to make cards and grandparents especially love to receive them.
  • Make your own envelopes as well. See eHow article in resources, below.
  • Homemade cards are often larger, heavier, thicker or otherwise outside of standard dimensions and may require additional postage.
