Want to make sure you get the right college roommate? Nervous about the situation? Make sure you follow a few easy guidelines.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Before filling out any forms or talking to friends decide on your own if you want to live with someone you know or someone random.

  2. Step 2

If you choose to room with someone you know make sure you agree, before moving in together, on the dynamics of your space. (when is it ok to have visitors, when is a good time for the lights to be turned off, what pet peeves should be avoided, is it ok to use each other's things, etc).

  3. Step 3

If you are like most people, however, you will room with someone you have never met and therefore rely on the university or college to match you up.

  4. Step 4

You should fill out you forms and questions yourself and do not include anyone else in this process. Parents, make sure to let your child do this!

  5. Step 5

Be sure to fill in every question completely and honestly. This will ensure that the people match you up will have the best chance at making a good match.

  6. Step 6

Once you get your roommate, talk to them about any concerns you have or things that may become a problem. This will start you off on the right foot!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you keep the communication open throughout the time you live together.
  • Some pairings, even if everyone is honest, just don't work. Do not be disappointed by this.
