Step 1
Read, read, read. It is safe to say that the majority of successful writers agree that the key to better writing is extensive reading. Rather than limiting your reading to your writing genre, branch out and read a little bit of everything. Fiction writers gather a large majority of their content from non fiction. Borrowing books from your local library, or reading ebooks online is an excellent, inexpensive way to begin the journey to better writing.
-
Step 2
Write daily. This is the key to improving your writing skills. Harlan Ellison, the science fiction writer, says it this way: “Anyone can become a writer. The trick is staying a writer.” It doesn’t necessarily matter what you write as long as you are writing. Keeping a daily journal can help writers develop consistency with their writing. Blogging is also a great way to exercise daily writing.
-
Step 3
Take the limits off the subjects you write about. Try your hand at writing in many different genres. Doing this will stretch your writing skills, and you may discover new areas of interest. Writing a poem may inspire you to write a novel, or nonfiction self-help book. The possibilities are endless.
-
Step 4
Visit websites that are dedicated to writers and read online articles about writing techniques. Many websites offer free email newsletters that give you weekly tips and writing advice.
-
Step 5
Find a local or online writing group to bounce ideas off of. Feedback from other writers can be extremely beneficial. Be selective about writing groups you join, participating only in groups that offer positive feedback and constructive criticism. Can’t find a local writing group? Start one. Many libraries allow locals to post events, reading, and writing group info at their facilities. Many libraries also allow local groups to meet at their branches for free, as long as the groups are non-profit. Call your local library for rules and regulations.
