Step 1
Sit down with your family and decide on a theme for this year’s Christmas tree. Examples: If your family loves sports, decorate your tree with sports-oriented ornaments, like soccer balls, baseballs, hockey sticks, etc. If you have a musical family, decorate with musical instrument ornaments. You can also use color themes, and make home made ornaments with common, inexpensive items, such as ribbon, beads, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, or any small, lightweight object around the house. If you cannot decide on a theme, put some ideas on slips of paper and draw a theme, or vote on a theme.
-
Step 2
If you don’t want a particular theme, let each family member make a certain number of home made ornaments out of various materials. Encourage creativity when assigning ornament-making. Just about any small, light item can be made into an ornament.
-
Step 3
Make ornaments and decorations out of items that represent each family member. If mom likes cooking, her ornament can be made from a small measuring spoon with ribbon tied on it, etc. Allow each family member to make ornaments that either represent their interests or personality, or let each member make an ornament for every other member of the family. Example: Mom makes an ornament that represents herself, dad, daughter, son, etc.

on 11/9/2009 I love this Christmas tree tradition article. I did something similar when my kids were growing up and it was a positive experience that stayed with them once grown. 5*
