Establish a Daily Islamic Studies Review Time for Your Family

As Muslim parents, we have the responsiblity to ensure the education of our children not only in traditional academic subjects, but in their religion as well. Like academic subjects, Islamic concepts and routines need to be reviewed often to make them stick and become second nature. Establishing a daily Islamic review routine can make the task of instilling Muslim values and rituals even easier. Try these tips for establishing a daily Islamic Studies review session.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper/Pencil or computer
  • Your Kids
  • You
  1. Step 1

Set up categories to review each day. Example: Saturday - Ibaadah; Sunday - Aqeedah; Monday - Prayer; Tuesday - Adab (Manners); Wednesday - Duaa/Dhikr; Thursday - Islamic History/Seerah

  2. Step 2

Begin compiling Islamic questions and answer cards or lists separated into the categories as in Step 1. If you teach your kids at home, simply add on skills/concepts as you cover them in class or add concepts as covered in school, for public school students (based upon your student's homework and tests).

  3. Step 3

Each day, take 5, 10, or 15 minutes (assign a regular time such as at dinner, before bed, etc) and review the questions and answers on your list/cards for that day.

  4. Step 4

Besides straight forward questions, you can include physical activities such as having student demonstrate how to make wudhu or pray.

Tips & Warnings
  • You do not have to go through all questions you've come up with for a topic on a single day. If child has trouble with particular concepts, you can choose to stick with those for some time.
  • Keep your review cards or lists in a binder for quick use.
  • The review session is a great way to get in some short family time. You can even couple it with a family reading time such as a story, reciting quraan, or reading ahadith.
