How to file a PROVISIONAL Patent Application ~ PPA
An easy, fast and inexpensive way to protect an idea for a new invention is to file a Provisional Patent Application - PPA. Once filed, the U.S. Patent Office immediately records the official filing date and the invention can be labeled "Patent Pending".
Once the Provisional Patent Application is filed, you can safely inform people about the invention, seek investors for development and sell the product with the confidence your idea is protected for 12 months.

~ Locate Attorney or Online Provisional Patent Service ~
A qualified Provisional Patent attorney or online service must be located to supply, prepare and file the necessary U.S. Patent Office forms.
All basic information listed in Steps 2-4 must be supplied to the attorney or online service.

~ Describe and Explain the Invention in Writing ~
A simple, straightforward and concise description must be written describing the invention. The description must make it clear to a person who is familiar with the subject matter how to make use of the idea.
A Provisional Application's written description should include the following:
~ Title of invention
~ Purpose of the invention
~ Description of drawings
~ Components and steps of the invention
~ How components fit together or how the steps are completed

~ Create List of Inventors Names ~
A Provisional Patent application must include the names of all inventors involved.

~ Supply Drawings of Invention ~
Drawings help others to quickly and clearly understand the invention.
The U.S. Patent Office accepts these drawing formats for Provisional Patent application ~
~ Top, side, disassembled, exploded, perspective view
~ Labeling numbers (e.g. sheet, figure, reference)
~ Schematics and flowcharts
~ Black and white or color photographs
~ Computer generated or handmade drawings -

~ Decide to File for a Full Patent or Not ~
The Provisional Patent will expire 12 months after the original issue date. If the invention is successful or well on it's way to be successfully developed, a full patent should be applied for.
