Teaching English abroad can be a great way to get paid while you travel in addition to helping others learn English. China is one of the many countries that hires English teachers from abroad. When applying for English teaching jobs in China, be sure to act professional and follow all of the company's requirements. It can be hard for a company to hire employees without meeting in person, so the company may have additional requirements that you wouldn't expect from traditional jobs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider getting a certification to teach English. A Bachelor's Degree is required to teach English abroad in China, but you should also think about getting TESOL or TEFL certification. With specialized training in teaching English as a second language, you will be able to apply for more prestigious positions that offer higher pay.

  2. Step 2

Look for job openings online. Visit job boards that focus on opportunities for English teaching abroad. You should see a number of companies that are hiring in China. Research the company online to be sure that it is a good company. You'll occasionally find that some companies don't treat their workers very well.

  3. Step 3

Apply for jobs in cities that interest you. Decide which area of China you want to live in and apply for jobs in those areas. Tailor your resume to highlight any teaching experience. Many applications will require a photo.

  4. Step 4

Brush up on your interview skills. You will most likely be interviewing over the phone. Be sure to think about the questions the interviewer may ask you, such as why you want to live in China and what you would do in certain teaching situations.

  5. Step 5

Get your visa from the Chinese embassy. Once hired, your company will help you to apply for your Chinese visa. Be sure to apply in advance so that you will have your visa by the time you are scheduled to leave.

  6. Step 6

Participate in the company's training program. Most companies will have you attend a training program. This is ideal for those without much experience, but it will also help you to learn what the company expects from you. The training program will focus on both skills for teaching English and classroom management skills.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your salary may be sufficient for the town that you are living in, but will be low by Western standards. If you have debts that you are trying to pay back home, your Chinese salary may not cover your expenses.
