MSN is a popular electronic service that provides dial-up Internet services and entertainment features such as MSN instant messenger, also known as Windows Live Messenger. Like many other chatting applications such as AOL Chat, Yahoo Chat and Skype, people all over the world can use MSN instant messenger to chat with friends and family, exchange documents and photos, and even have video conversations with people thousands of miles away.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Download the MSN application. Do this by visiting the MSN Messenger website (see Resources) and clicking the gray download button on the right side of the screen. Allow the application to fully download to your computer before disconnecting from the Internet or shutting down your computer. You may be prompted to restart your computer after the application has been downloaded.

  2. Step 2

Obtain a .NET passport (see Resources). .NET passports are used with most MSN applications and are required to use with MSN instant messenger. If you already have an MSN or Hotmail account, this step is not necessary.

  3. Step 3

Sign in to MSN instant messenger with your email address and password. Enter your information, and click the sign in button on the messenger screen. After a few seconds, you will be taken to the chat screen.

  4. Step 4

Add your friends and family to your contact list. You can do this by selecting the Messenger icon with the green plus sign located at the top right of the Messenger screen. Enter the individual's email address, and click "OK." The individual is now added to your contact list and will be ready to chat when he comes online.

  5. Step 5

Select a contact to begin a conversation. Double-click the contact's icon to open a chat screen. You can also click "Actions" and choose from your list of contacts to start a conversation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Personalize your conversations by adding display pictures, changing fonts, adding backgrounds to the conversation screen and using emoticons while typing.
  • Using a Wi-Fi connection while chatting can result in lost messages because of the unreliability of the signal. Make sure to download MSN instant messenger from the official MSN website, and refrain from downloading third-party software such as emoticons and blocking features. Downloading MSN content from websites other than MSN will increase your chances of obtaining dangerous viruses that can harm your computer.
