How to Do Blanket Binding

Blankets are a simple sewing project. Minimal work is required to create a blanket: a layer or two of fabric with binding around the edges. Sewing binding onto a blanket both secures the fabric together while ensuring the fabric will not fray. In addition to the practical aspects of the blanket, binding creates a decorative element to the blanket. Binding is available pre-made at most fabric stores, folded and prepared for easy application.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a binding material. Bias tape is an easy choice due to its practical nature and the flexibility of the tape when sewing onto a blanket. The binding will be folded in half, with the edges folded under. Think about the texture of the blanket material and how the binding will look with this material.

    • 2

Cut the fabric for the blanket to the desired size. Measure all four sides of the fabric, along the outer edge of the piece of fabric to determine length of binding needed.

    • 3

Cut the blanket binding 3 inches longer than the total measurement of the four sides of the fabric.

    • 4

Use the binding to sew together two pieces of fabric, a front and back piece, or one piece. Place the blanket binding along the edge of the fabric. Open the folded binding and set the blanket edge evenly inside the binding, so the binding wraps securely around the edge of the blanket. If sewing together two pieces of fabric, make sure they are even with each other to avoid bunching in the middle of the blanket.

    • 5

Pin the binding to the edge of the blanket, making sure the binding is placed evenly along the edge of the blanket. Curve the corners of the blanket so the binding can smoothly wrap along the edge.

    • 6

Begin sewing the binding, making sure the blanket pieces and binding pieces are sewn together. Back-tack at the beginning of the sewing, moving the stitch in an even line along the edge of the blanket. When you reach the end of the binding, fold under 1 inch for a clean edge. Sew past the end of the binding, back-tacking to secure the binding on the blanket. The binding will overlap a few inches.

Trim any loose threads from the sewing process.
