How to Fix Limewire

LimeWire is one of the popular file-sharing applications used to search for and download content from other users. It installs and runs easily on a computer but can occasionally run into connection problems that prevent access to the Gnutella network. The connection problems are generally caused by firewall programs blocking connection ports. The problems can also be caused by an outdated Java application.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the LimeWire connection if you are having a hard time searching for content. To do so, click the "File" button on the LimeWire program and click "Advanced Tools."

    • 2

Click the "Connections" tab. Your connection is down if you see "Connecting" on the ports under "Host." This usually occurs when a firewall program is blocking the access to the Gnutella network that LimeWire uses to search for content. Close LimeWire.

    • 3

Add LimeWire to the exceptions list on any third-party firewall (e.g., Internet security tool) you have installed on your computer. This varies depending on security; refer to your program's documentation.

    • 4

Launch LimeWire again and check the connection status from the "Connections" tab. Check the connection bar on the bottom left of the program. The connection is still down if you do not see any bars.

    • 5

Check the Windows firewall and make sure LimeWire is on the exceptions list. To do so, click the Windows "Start" button and click the "Control Panel." Double-click "Firewall" and click the "Exceptions" tab. Place a check on LimeWire to add it to the exceptions list. Click "Add Programs" if you do not see LimeWire. Import LimeWire from the Program Files folder and click "OK" to add it to the exceptions list.

    • 6

Launch LimeWire again and check the connection status. Download and install the latest Java if you are still having problems.

    • 7

Uninstall and reinstall LimeWire as a final resort if you are still having problems. To uninstall LimeWire, click the Windows "Start" button and click the "Control Panel." Double-click "Add or Remove Programs" to open the programs window. Double-click "Program and Features" (Windows Vista users) and click "Uninstall a Program" to open the programs window.

    • 8

Scroll through the programs window and click LimeWire. Click "Remove/Uninstall" to uninstall it from your computer. Download and reinstall LimeWire again.
