Mirrors serve many purposes for both function and design. Mirrors are used for dressing and grooming in closets or bathrooms but also serve as decorative accessories for the rest of the house. You can choose decorative mirrors in any number of shapes and styles with many types of frames or edging. Use decorative mirrors to add the illusion of space, reflect lighting, highlight a room's focal point and add interest to your decor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mirrors
  • Candles
  • Sconces
  • Decorative paintings or photos

    Add the Illusion of Size

  1. Step 1

Place mirrors at the end of a hallway to create a look of length. Hang wall-length mirrors about 6 inches off the floor on the wall where the hallway ends.

  2. Step 2

Place large mirrors along a broad wall in a small dining or living room to add visual space. The mirrors will make a smaller room feel less cramped or closed off.

  3. Step 3

Place mirrors in rooms that do not have windows to achieve a faux window look. Add some fabric to look like a curtain is pulled back from the mirror.

  4. Reflect Lighting and Add Interest

  5. Step 1

Place a mirror behind a lamp or a group of candles. The mirror will reflect the light, thus creating more light and spreading it into the room.

  6. Step 2

Place large mirrors on the wall opposite paintings or photographs. Reflections of the photographs or paintings will then be viewable from both sides of the room.

  7. Step 3

Group several different sizes of mirrors with different frames together. A group of mirrors haphazardly placed in one area of a wall can serve as an interesting art collection.

Tips & Warnings
  • Mirrors, unless full length, work best at eye level if they will be used to view a person's reflection as well as for decorative purposes.
  • Make sure to secure your mirrors according to the manufacturer's instructions. Unstable mirrors may fall and cause severe injury.
