How to Insulate Shipping Containers
When you ship something breakable, you want to make sure it gets there intact. You do not want the recipient opening the box and finding a gift shattered in the box. That is why it is important to insulate the container in which you ship an item. It is a cheap measure with invaluable results. There are two popular items to use in packing a box--packing peanuts and bubble wrap. Learn how to pack a box safely.

Packing with Peanuts
-
1
Place your item into the cardboard box. If there are multiple items, wrap each item separately with newspaper. It should be centered within the box to distribute the weight evenly. Make sure the thickness of the cardboard box matches the weight of the item. If the item is too heavy for the cardboard box, you need to ship it in a heavier-duty box.

2
Fill the gaps around the item with packing peanuts. Pack tightly up to the top of the box. The peanuts will provide a flexible but firm insulation to ensure the safe arrival of your package.

3
Close the top of the box and seal with packing tape. Use several pieces if need to make sure the top of the box stays shut. The package should not shake loosely when picked up. The peanuts provide enough insulation to keep the item firmly in place.

4
Ship your package. Following these instructions closely will ensure the safe arrival of your package.
Packing with Bubble Wrap
-
5
Wrap the item you want to ship in bubble wrap. Completely cover the item and tape the bubble wrap with either packing tape or household desk tape. The bubble wrap should form a firm and tight exterior for your item. Also keep in mind that the item, when wrapped in bubble paper, should be the same size as the inside of the box.
-
6
Place the item into the cardboard box. If you wrap the item enough, it should fit snugly into the box. If it is still loose in the box, fill in the gaps with packing peanuts or old newspaper.

7
Close the flaps on the cardboard box. Seal with the packing tape. Use several pieces if needed to ensure the box stays closed. When you pick the box up, make sure there is no movement inside the box. The bubble wrap and peanuts or newspaper will keep the item firmly in place.
