How to Make Stumps Rot
Tree stumps in the yard can be a nuisance when trimming your grass or doing other types of lawn maintenance. Stumps are also a safety hazard as they are not always easily visible, making them easy to trip over. The fastest way to take care of this problem is hiring a professional to pull it directly out of the ground. While this is a quick fix, it is often expensive and can make a big mess in your yard. The cleanest way to get rid of stumps in your yard is to promote rotting in the wood. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Drill holes at least 1 inch deep into the surface of the stump. The placement of the holes isn't extremely important, but try to keep them spaced apart evenly.
-
2
Pour water onto the stump until the surface starts to feel soggy. The holes will make the stump absorb water more efficiently.

3
Continue to pour water on the holes daily. The constant moisture makes the stump rot several times faster than it would without the added water.
-
4
Observe the stump carefully each day. It will eventually rot enough that you can remove the wood without the use of tools. Be patient, as it can take over a year for it to completely rot.
