Step 1
Clean and service your energy units such as your air conditioner and furnace. More than half of the calls made to repair furnaces result in a dirty filter, something you can change yourself. Clean your furnaces blower fan too. All it takes is a soft brush and your Dirt Devil.
-
Step 2
Close off any unused rooms in your home. Adjust the registers and close the dampers to lower your cooling and heating bills.
Dampers over fireplaces should also be closed when the fireplace is not being used. If you never use your fireplace, put insulation in a bag and use it to seal the flue. -
Step 3
Put more blankets on your bed in the winter and lower the temperatures on your furnace at night. In the evening, wear more clothing and keep it set a few degrees lower than you are used to for a savings of two to three percent per degree. You will save money and it won't cost you a thing.
Take off blankets and raise your thermostat for a warmer house in the summer. Wear loose, airy clothing and turn on your fans. -
Step 4
Use your washer and dryer during the early hours or late hours when rates are lower. Clean out the lint screens in both machines every time you use them. Clean works more efficiently.
At the same time, use your washer and your dishwasher only when they are completely full. You will have more efficient energy use. Let your dishes air dry.
Wash your clothes in cold water. At the same time, lower your water heater setting to 120 degrees to save money and increase safety from scalding water. -
Step 5
Use energy saving methods to cook your food. If you are in a hurry, use your microwave or pressure cooker. If you are a planner, use your crock-pot.
Think. What other free methods can you do to lower your energy costs and save money? Do all the free actions you can before you pay to save money on energy fees.
