Step 1
Have your dog vaccinated against the disease by your veterinarian. This vaccine is commonly offered by veterinarians during annual exams. It is usually boostered at 6 month intervals.
It should be given at least 2 weeks before your pet goes to the kennel. -
Step 2
Avoid places that have high concentrations of dogs. The easiest way to prevent disease is to simply keep your dog away from these areas.
Places that normally have high concentrations of dogs would include kennels, dog shows, and breeding facilities. -
Step 3
Use a pet sitter if you are going out of town. Pet sitters will look after your pet in your home in many cases, completely avoiding the contact that allows kennel cough to be passed from animal to animal.
-
Step 4
In the event that your pet does contract kennel cough, they will sometimes require a course of antibiotics. Consult your vet before starting any medications.
-
Step 5
In some cases cough suppressants may be needed if the coughing is severe to make your pet more comfortable. Again, consult your vet before starting any medications.
