A Notary Public is necessary for most of us at some point in our life to witness a signature on a document, such as the purchase of a home, contracts, wills or power of attorney documents.

It's not always easy to remember where to find a notary when we need one though. This article walks you through the steps for finding a notary public in your area.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your local bank. All banks are required to have a notary public on the premises. You don't need to have an account to use the services of their notary public either.

  2. Step 2

Find a UPS Store. UPS Stores offer notary public services at all locations. If you need to copy and send your documents, it's a one stop trip, saving you time.

  3. Step 3

Find a mobile notary public by using an online service. Resources below has links to several online directories that list mobile notary public agents who will travel to your location. They usually charge a travel fee on top of their regular fee, but if you are not able to travel, this may be the solution to getting a document notarized. Most work by using your zip code for a search.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is necessary to have your documents complete and ready for signature before you seek the services of a notary. They cannot offer any legal advice, nor can they help you write any of the documents you will need them to notarize.
  • Although actual fees charged by a notary are minimal, travel for a mobile notary may make the cost of having a single document notarized prohibitive.

on 11/5/2009 If "walk-in" notary service is desired, you can also find notary service at most "Post & Ship" stores. However, if personalized service wherein the notary comes to you, the internet search engines will provide by far a huge listing of agents. http://notarypubicoc.com also contains a Google Search window that allows comparison of site to entire web.
