When you put your newborn baby down to sleep in his baby crib, it is important to know that it is a safe baby crib environment. Follow these guidelines to ensure that his baby crib is safe.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove blankets and other objects from the crib. There should not be any items in the crib with the baby. The baby should be put to sleep in a sleep sack or wearable blanket rather than covered with a loose blanket.

  2. Step 2

Evaluate crib bedding. The baby crib comforter and crib bumpers can be dangerous for your newborn infant as they can pose a suffocation risk. Remove these items from the crib. If crib bumpers must be used, consider using breathable bumpers.

  3. Step 3

Hang crib mobiles at the proper height. Mobiles and other objects that hang over the crib should be high enough that the baby cannot grab them. Once the baby can sit up, mobiles should be removed.

  4. Step 4

Use a snug mattress. The crib mattress should fit snugly in the crib. If two fingers can fit between the mattress and the crib, it is not the proper fit. The mattress should be covered with a tight fitted sheet with a waterproof cover underneath if desired. Mattress pads should not be used as the baby should be on a firm sleep surface.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always lay the baby on his back to sleep.
