Everyone is tightening their belts these days but your hair doesn't have to suffer for it with these money saving hair tips.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stop buying expensive shampoos and switch over to store brand knock-offs of your favorite brands. These inexpensive shampoos are available at drug stores, grocery stores, Target and Walmart under their store name. While these shampoos and other hair products may not be made by the brand name manufacturer, it will be hard to tell the difference between products in a blind test. Try it yourself and see if you can tell the difference.

  2. Step 2

Stop coloring your hair at the salon and do it yourself. These home hair dye products can be very good and will cost significantly less than a professional dye job.

If you currently have highlights of any color, this could be hard to do at home. If you really want to save money, change your hair color to a single process and do it yourself.

  3. Step 3

Haircuts can be stretched out if you go with a basic blunt cut and trim your bangs yourself. If you prefer, you could grow your bangs out and eliminate the need to cut them yourself. Simply wear a headband or hair clip during this awkward bang stage.

  4. Step 4

Stop using hairsprays and gels. If you get a very basic cut, you will have less styling issues and will not need hairspray, gel and other styling products to keep your hair looking neat. If you are having a particularly bad hair day, pull it back in a pony tail and rub a tiny bit of petroleum jelly between your fingers and rub through your hair to tame it.

  5. Step 5

Switch your hair salon if you go to an over priced salon. Some salons charge significantly more than others for the same haircuts. While it is probably true that you get the best haircut at a salon that pays their employees more, a basic hair cut can be done well by most hairstylists. Ask your friends and neighbors for referrals before blindly choosing a new hairstylist.

  6. Step 6

Perms can be done at home with the help of a friend or family member. Doing a home perm can save you a lot of money and is a lot easier than you think!
