In this article, you'll learn how to research and find the right acting class for you in the Los Angeles area (or any other area for that matter).

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet
  • Patience
  • Free Time
  1. Step 1

Research Online. Yes, you can do the usual search on your search engine of choice, but you need to make sure you are also looking at the right sites. Be sure to check Craig's List and look at Backstage.com, LACasting.com, and even LA Stage Alliance. All of these sites will list workshops that have been posted by the educators or company.

  2. Step 2

Talk to a Human. Don't trust everything you read on the internet. You need make sure you get a phone number, call, and talk a human being. When you call is the best time to get all of your questions answered.

  3. Step 3

Ask Questions. Some questions to ask are: 1) When and where does the class take place? 2) What is the price of the class? 3) What is the policy if you have an emergency and can't make a class (money back or refund?)? 4) What does the class focus on? 5) If it's film acting, do you get time in front of the camera and time to evaluate yourself with the class? 6) What big name actors have taken this class, if any?

  4. Step 4

Audit the Classes that sound best to you after your phone conversation. Most classes and workshops will allow actors to come in and watch for no fee. This is called Auditing a Class. If they require payment for auditing, it's usually not worth it. Audit the class to see the students and the teacher. If it doesn't feel like where you belong and what you want to do then you know without wasting money.

  5. Step 5

Always Check Credits. Check the credits of the instructor and students, if possible. This can be as simple as getting some names and looking them up online, especially their credits on IMBD.com. You can find out a lot about something by learning about the people involved with it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't always trust what you read on the internet. Get the facts from an actual person.
  • You may have to audit 20 or more classes/workshops before you find the right one for you. But don't give up!
  • If something doesn't feel right when you're talking to someone on the phone or via e-mail, you have no obligations to pursue it. Stop the contact.
  • If something doesn't feel right when you arrive to audit a class, you have every right to leave. Don't stay someplace that is not comfortable for you.
