How to Convert a Song to MP3 Format

You can download and listen to albums using iTunes software. This program can also be used to add files to and remove music from any iPod. You might not know that you can also use iTunes to convert songs to MP3 format. This can be useful for converting songs or albums to place on your portable MP3 player. Convert songs on a CD or songs already on your computer using iTunes.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Files on your computer

  1. Step 1

    Open iTunes and click "File." Open "Add Folder to Library." A "Browse for Folder" window will open.

  2. Step 2

    Scroll through the "Browse for Folder" window until you find the folder that has the songs you wish to convert to MP3 format. Highlight that particular folder and click "OK" to add those files to iTunes.

  3. Step 3

    Click the "Music" link on the left of iTunes. Albums will then be listed in the middle of iTunes.

  4. Step 4

    Open the album that has the songs you want to convert to MP3 format (the album you imported in Step 2).

  5. Step 5

    Highlight the song or songs you want to convert to MP3 format. Click the "Advanced" option at the top of the program. A drop box will appear. Choose "Create MP3 Version." The songs will be converted to MP3 format and these songs will automatically be saved in the iTunes folder.

  6. Songs on CD

  7. Step 1

    Open iTunes and click "Edit." Choose "Preferences." A large window will open. Choose the "General" tab in the top left of the window.

  8. Step 2

    Click the "Import Settings" in the center of the window. A smaller window will appear.

  9. Step 3

    Change the "Import Setting" by clicking on that drop box and selecting "MP3 Encoder." Click the "Setting" box and choose "Higher Quality." Click "OK" in the smaller and larger windows to close both windows.

  10. Step 4

    Insert the CD with the songs you want to convert to MP3 format into the computer. A small window will open asking if you wish to import the entire CD into iTunes. Click "Yes" if you want to convert every song on that CD to MP3 format. The songs will be imported to your iTunes folder as MP3 files. If you want to select which songs to convert, click "No" and move on to the last step.

  11. Step 5

    Remove the check marks from the boxes next to songs you don't want to convert to MP3 format by clicking inside those boxes. Click "Import CD" at the bottom of the iTunes software. The songs you didn't de-select will be imported to the iTunes folder as MP3 files.
