How to Download Songs Faster With Slow Internet

Downloading songs using slow Internet connection speeds such as dial-up can be a daunting task because the file(s) can take a long time compared to fast broadband speeds (DSL). Connections such as dial-up support speeds up to 56Kbps, which is extremely slow for downloading some of the high-quality audio files on the Internet. While realistically you cannot improve song download speeds of slow Internet connections relative to that of broadband, a few tweaks can certainly make the downloads a tad faster.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the highest speed setting (56Kbps) for your modem before proceeding with the downloads. Most of the newer modems select the highest speed automatically. For older systems, you can adjust the speed settings using the utility that is used to dial the modem.

    • 2

Download and install faster web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox or Opera (see both in resources). These web browsers include better coding for faster downloads compared to other web browsers such as Internet Explorer.

    • 3

Close extra browsers and applications you may be currently running. Additional browsers and running applications consume system resources (RAM) and cause downloads to slow down.

    • 4

Disable browser add-ons and toolbars that also slow down the computer and diminish download speed. Disabling browser add-ons and toolbars varies depending on the web browser you are using, but can generally be performed from the tools or preferences menu.

    • 5

Download and install a download accelerator. There are free download accelerator programs such as Speedbit Download Accelerator (see Resources) which automatically integrate on your web browser and optimize download speeds.

    • 6

Clear browser cache and history to remove unnecessary files that clog the computer system and diminish downloading speed. How to do this also varies depending on the web browser you are using, but can generally be performed from the tools or preferences menu.

    • 7

Turn on the pop-up blocker on your web browser to block pop-up advertisements. Pop-up advertisements consume bandwidth and can slow down page display and downloads.

    • 8

Navigate to the web page (e.g., Rhapsody) you want to download from and download one song at a time. If you are downloading from a third party program (e.g., Imesh), launch it and download one song at a time so you do not use more system RAM than you need to.

Tips & Warnings

  • Download songs during off-peak hours between 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
