How to Set Up Two Hard Drives on One Computer

With the increasing size of media files, games and other computer programs, it is a good idea to have two, if not more, hard drives connected to a computer. This allows specific content to be saved onto different hard drives, creating a computer work flow that operates much more efficiently. It also protects you from losing all of your data if one hard drive were ever to go down.

Instructions

Connect the second hard drive to the computer. Plug an external hard drive into the computer via a USB or FireWire cable. To install an internal drive, take apart the computer's tower and plug the drive into an open expansion bay. Internal drives are more permanent and can't be carted around from computer to computer so easily.

Power on all of the hard drives you have connected to the computer. Open up "My Computer" (or "Computer" in later versions of Windows). All of the connected hard drives are displayed in the window.

    • 3

Right-Click on the drive names and select "Rename." Give the new hard drive a specific name. This should help you remember what content is saved onto each drive (such as "Music," "Videos" or "Photos").

    • 4

Click and drag all of the particular files into their allocated hard drives. Once completed remove the original copies to save space on the old hard drive.

    • 5

Select the specific hard drive when saving a new file. Make sure it goes into its designated hard drive. Eventually this becomes a habit and all file retrieval becomes much easier.
