How to Place a Phone Call to Korea

If you know someone who lives in Korea or you need to discuss important business matters, you may need to know how to place a phone call to Korea. Calling Korea is not difficult because it follows the same guidelines as any international call. Depending on where you are, international calling rates usually are not terribly expensive and most people can access an international phone card. Once you go through the dialing process the first time, it is much easier to remember for the next.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an international phone card. This can be found at convenience stores or online at sites such as Phone Card Mania (see Resources). Fees range from less than 3 cents to 10 cents per minute, depending on the service. Call the number on the back of the card and enter the PIN number.

    • 2

Find out if you need to dial 9. Some businesses and institutions require 9 to be dialed in order to make an external phone call or fax. If you are calling from outside a business or an office building, then dialing 9 is not necessary.

    • 3

Dial the country code of the country that you are calling from. For example, if you are calling from the United States, you need to dial 011.

    • 4

Dial South Korea's country code: 82. You must dial it if you are calling from outside Korea.

    • 5

Dial the city code and local phone number. For example, if you want to contact someone in Seoul you need to dial 2 as the city code.

Tips & Warnings

  • According to the How to Call Abroad website (see Resources) you need to drop the 0 if the number you are calling begins with 1. For calls to a cell phone dial: 011 + 82 + 1XXXX XXXX (X). Take into consideration Korea's time difference when placing your call.
