Instructions

    • 1

Create an outline of your mosaic design on the clean, dry surface of your sink. You don't have to create a pattern, you can simply place the tiles at random and end up with an interesting and beautiful design. If you would like to create an image, you'll need an outline to follow as you tile.

    • 2

Make notations of the colors or parts of the image inside the outline. For example, if you are making a mosaic hummingbird on your sink, designate the different parts of the bird and any surrounding flowers. This will make tiling much easier as you will know which colors to place where.

    • 3

Begin tiling in the bottom of the basin of the sink. Add a thin layer of thinset to a small portion of the surface of the sink, or fill in one section of your image with thinset. You can use a trowel or your gloved hands to spread the thinset.

    • 4

Press the mosaic tiles into the mortar, leaving 1/8 inch between each tile. Your spacing does not have to be perfect, just try to keep it uniform.

    • 5

Fill in the bottom of the basin with tiles and then work your way up each of the sides. The thinset will hold the tiles in place well, but if they start to fall, you need a thicker layer of thinset. Let the mortar dry.

    • 6

Fill in the crevices between the tiles with exterior grout. You can use a grout float to press the grout in firmly, or you can use your gloved hands. Clean the grout residue from the ceramic or glass tiles before the grout dries. The grout removes easily with a sponge and warm water, but you may have to make several passes before it's all gone.

    • 7

Apply grout sealer within three days of grouting your mosaic sink. Follow the manufacturer's directions for applying the sealer.
