Braces are a common part of many teens' and adults' lives. To avoid trips to the orthodontist, you must clean your braces often and thoroughly. Although cleaning around your braces may seem like a burden, the long-term benefit of healthy and straight teeth is worth the 10 to 15 minutes per day spent cleaning. Braces that are not maintained can result in tooth decay, gum disease or white spots on the teeth, according to worlddental.org.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soft bristle toothbrush
  • Waxed floss
  • Antiseptic mouthwash
  1. Step 1

Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste using a soft bristle toothbrush twice a day. Do not apply too much pressure to your teeth or gums, as this may cause damage in the braces. According to worlddental.org, an interdental toothbrush is beneficial for braces. These brushes are shaped like tiny Christmas trees and fit between braces.

  2. Step 2

Floss your teeth using waxed floss. Do not use unwaxed floss as it will get caught in the brackets. Harmful bacteria gather around the braces; therefore, flossing is often the only way to remove it. Orthodonics.org recommends using the Platypus Flosser---a fork-shaped flossing device available at most supermarkets and pharmacies.

  3. Step 3

Rinse your mouth with antiseptic mouthwash for 30 seconds. The mouthwash destroys germs that brushing and flossing missed. If you are under the age of 12, you may require a child brand of mouthwash. Consult your orthodontist for suggestions.

  4. Step 4

Open your mouth wide and check the appearance of your teeth in the mirror. According to orthodonics.org, metal braces should be shiny after cleaning.

Tips & Warnings
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or once the bristles wear. Opt for a powered toothbrush instead of a manual one. Although it is not necessary, you may want to brush your teeth after every meal.
  • If any of your bands break while you are cleaning your braces, consult your orthodontist immediately. Inform your orthodontist should you experience bleeding of the gums or toothaches.
