How to Measure to Cut Off Pants for Shorts
Most people have an old pair of pants that they don't wear anymore. It may be because the pants have holes in them, or the pants may have simply been forgotten. Whatever the reason, there's an easy way to reshape those old pants and add some more style to them. To make cut-offs from pants, all you need is basic sewing skills and the proper measuring tools. Put on the pants and look in the mirror to decide how long you want the shorts to be. Use a tape measure to measure the length from the floor to the spot on the pants where you want to cut.

Take the pants off and lay them flat on the ground. Starting from the bottom of the pant leg, use the measurement from Step 1 and measure up to that point on the pants. For instance, if the measurement you got from Step 1 was 24 inches, measure 24 inches up the pant leg. Use a pencil to mark that point.

Line up the ruler horizontally across the pant leg against the pencil dot from Step 2. Draw a straight line across the pant leg at this point.

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the other pant leg.

Use fabric scissors to cut the pant legs off, following the lines you drew.
