How to Care for Your Safety Razor
Safety razors originated in the 19th century. Despite the overwhelming popularity of multiple blade razors, safety razors retain a cult-like following of collectors and users. Dedicated users argue a closer shave and cheaper replacement blade are the main selling points. Safety razors are quite resilient as long as proper care is taken. Cleaning the razor will keep it looking new and fresh for years to come. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Toothbrush
- Washcloth
- Hydrogen peroxide
- 70 percent isopropyl alcohol
- Tarnish remover solution
- Metal polish
- Toothpick

Soak the safety razor completely in a bowl of hydrogen peroxide for 8 hours.

Use an old toothbrush to scrub away the loosened grime and dirt. Allow the razor to then soak for another 2 hours. Again, scrub away any loosened grime.

Use a toothpick to remove any dirt buried in the details of the safety razor. Wipe it clean with a warm washcloth.

Use tarnish remover in a pot of boiling water. Allow the safety razor to boil in the solution for roughly 30 minutes. Carefully cool off the solution and remove the razor.

Disinfect the razor by soaking it in isopropyl alcohol. Wipe clean with warm water and a washcloth.

Polish the razor with the metal polish.

Extend the life of your razor blade by running it back and forth half a dozen times across the pant leg of an old pair of jeans. This helps dry the razor completely. Soak the blade in mineral oil to repel water, decreasing oxidation.

Tips & Warnings
While the soaking of the razor in numerous different solutions may seem overkill, it is really the difference between your razor looking brand new or worn down and grimy.
Read the warning labels of each solution carefully. Certain solutions may not go well with the particular metal of your safety razor.
