Soft and durable, cotton fabric can be dated back at least 7,000 years. This natural fabric is both eco-friendly and affordable. It's pleasing, no matter your style. Over the years, cotton has been harvested and used for everything from clothing and plush bath towels to sturdy tarpaulins. With so many uses in our day-to-day lives, stains are inevitable. Cotton fabric can withstand much more than people assume.
Things You'll Need
- Table salt
- Hair shampoo
- White vinegar
- Soft clean cloth
Pour table salt on organic stains such as those from coffee and tea. Allow it to sit for 15 to 20 minutes. As the salt absorbs the moisture, it will begin to discolor.
Remove the salt by brushing it away and soak the item in cold water for at least 30 minutes.
Launder the item once the stain is gone.
Apply hair shampoo to grease stains. Scrub it in well with a toothbrush.
Allow the shampoo to sit on the stain for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing it under hot running water.
Launder the item once the stain is gone, repeating the process as needed.
Miscellaneous or Unidentifiable Stains
Mix white vinegar and water in equal parts and dip a clean cloth into it. Gently wipe the stain with the cloth until it is no longer visible. This works well on food and unidentifiable stains.
Soak lipstick stains in milk for 30 minutes. The type of milk doesn't matter as long as it isn't soy. Rinse the area with warm water and repeat until the stain is gone.
Freeze items in the freezer that have gum or any other sticky residue on them for at least an hour. Take the item out of the freezer. Gently scrape away the substance and launder if needed.
Tips & Warnings
- Avoid using hot water, except on grease stains, as this will only set them in and make them harder to remove.
