Reviewing math concepts daily is an easy way to make basic concepts stick. Having a premade routine can help you breeze through this task quickly. Here are some ideas for a daily addition review session.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • You
  • Your child
  • List of review items
  • Paper for your child (optional)
  • Pencil or crayon (optional)
  • Math facts flash cards (optional)
  1. Step 1

    Copy and paste the review steps in this article into your Word Processor, print them out, and keep them in a binder for quick use.

  2. Step 2

    Sitting with your child, ask the questions that follow.

  3. Step 3

    The numbers we are adding together when we add are called what? (Addends)

  4. Step 4

    What is the answer when we add called? (sum)

  5. Step 5

    What are the addends in this problem? (Give student an addition sentence, orally or written)

  6. Step 6

    What is the sum in this problem? (Give another addition sentence)

  7. Step 7

    Find the missing addend in this problem.

  8. Step 8

    Write the following words (or spell them orally): add, join, sum, all, equal, plus

  9. Step 9

    What is this sign called? (+)

  10. Step 10

    What is this sign called? (=)

  11. Step 11

    Give student a word problem to solve. Use a theme that student is currently studying or a subject that student likes (horses, cars, etc). You can also have student write the number sentence.

  12. Step 12

    At another point in the day (or at this time), give student math facts flash cards or have student play a math facts computer game to help memorize the addition math facts.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can write/type each step out on a card and make a review card deck. Laminate it for durability and keep it on a ring.
