Step 1
This technique works best if you already have a working relationship with a dry cleaner. If you don’t, that is ok too. Ask your dry cleaner how he disposes of unclaimed items. Many dry cleaners just take the unclaimed items to Goodwill, Salvation Army, or other charity.
-
Step 2
Take a moment to think about the types of items people take to the dry cleaner. The items are usually their highest quality fabrics such as cashmere, silk, wool, and other fine fabrics. By approaching your dry cleaner, you will already be dealing with higher quality clothing than you would find at a thrift store or garage sale.
-
Step 3
Silk ties, cashmere sweaters, business suits, men’s dress shirts, beaded evening wear, down comforters, and fine linens are all good sellers on eBay.
-
Step 4
Ask the dry cleaner if you can buy the unclaimed items by paying the balance due for the dry cleaning. Or, ask if you can buy the items for any price at all. You can negotiate the price.
-
Step 5
Your dry cleaner may not go for just letting you have the items at a set cost. Consider selling items on consignment for a commission. So, for example, say the cleaners has a cashmere coat that was left unclaimed. You could sell it on eBay and ask for a 30%-50% commission.
-
Step 6
By creating a partnership with your dry cleaner, you can have a stash of high quality items waiting for you each month. The items will be freshly dry cleaned, in a plastic bag, and ready to go. What could be easier?
