Tame a Teething Puppy's Chewing

Have a puppy who won't stop chewing? Here are nutritious ways to occupy his or her time away from eating your furniture!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Apples
  • Mini carrots
  • Puppy kong
  • Peanut butter
  • Banana
  • Mini ice cube tray

First, we will deal with the fruit and veggies.

Core the apple and cut into 8th's or smaller (depends on the size of the dog). Put the apple slices in a ziploc with a paper towel or napkin (that DOES NOT have print on it! The ink can get into the food!) and squeeze excess air out. Put aside.

  2. Step 2

Get a bag of mini carrots and cut them in half. Do the same as above with the paper towel and ziploc. Put to the side.

  3. Step 3

With the banana, cut info slices but not too thin. Give them enough "substance" to eat slice. Follow directs as above.

  4. Step 4

When you have all of your bags sealed and ready to go, put them all in the freezer. Give them a few good hours to really freeze to the core. Give your puppy these as treats, to deter them from chewing, to stop their biting on your hands, etc. The cold fruit/veggie acts as a baby teething ring for the animal but it is giving them the nutrients and is healthy for their growing bodies. It also aids in their losing their puppy teeth and makes way for their adult teeth.

Next, get out your puppy kong. You can get these anywhere like Petsmart, Target, Walmart, etc. Get your jar of peanut butter and scoop some out with a knife. It is easier to fill the kong with a knife rather than a spoon because that makes a mess. Fill the Kong with the peanut butter. Put the kong in the freezer as well. This will keep them busy for a GOOD WHILE! The peanut butter is good because the fat is good for their skin and their fur. I personally only eat natural pb because it does not have hydrogenated oils in it so that is what we give the dog as well. The natural oils are good!

Finally, get a ice cube tray the makes MINI ice cubes. Big cubes tend to freak out puppies. I have no clue why. My 8 year old dog hates large cubes but goes nuts for mini ones. Make a tray of mini cubes and put them in a bowl for the dog to get. Many puppies like ice and it feels good to them when they are teething. If you want to give the cubes a tiny flavor to attract them to it, add a little smidge of apple juice to the water.

I hope these tips help you in dealing with your teething little buddy! Leave me comments to let me know if it helped! Our newbie is A MESS with chewing and this helps him calm down a tad.

Tips & Warnings
  • DO NOT use napkins or paper towels with any sort of print on them!!!! The ink can seep into the fruit.
