There are many providers out there that offer instant messaging. Today, we are going to set up an account with Skype. So let’s get started, just follow the steps below to continue.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Download. Go to the Skype website. Once you are there, download Skype instant messenger on your desktop.

  2. Step 2

Install. When the program has downloaded on the desktop, click on it and select “Run”.

  3. Step 3

Sign on. If you are signing on for the first time and don’t have a screen name, click onto new name and hit the sign on button.

  4. Step 4

Adding your details. Put your information into the required fields on the pop-up window. When you are done, submit your information.

  5. Step 5

Editing your details. To edit your details, go to “account on the tool bar and select “my profile.” Now you can edit and add more details if you want to.

  6. Step 6

Adding Skype contacts. You may have friends that also have an account that you may want to contact. To add them to your address book, go to contacts and then click “add a contact.” Type the user name of your friend and hit search.

  7. Step 7

Check who is online. Skype will automatically search for any contacts currently online.

  8. Step 8

Sending an instant message. Click on the contact you wish to talk to. Click the send instant message option. A new window will open. Type in your message and add emoticons if you wish. Once you finish typing your message, click “send.” Your message will appear in the large text box above and it will be sent to your contact.

  9. Step 9

Having a conversation. You and your friend will have the same window open on the computer screen. Just send messages back and forth to each other. You are having a conversation.

  10. Step 10

Sending files. To send a file to another Skype user, open up a conversation with them and go to contacts, and then “send file.” Now choose the file you wish to send.

  11. Step 11

Security. If you get a message from someone you don’t know, block that person from sending anything else. Never give credit card or bank details over an IM connection. So that’s it, you are done.
