Things You'll Need:
- Manic Panic Hair Dye
- Latex Gloves
- A dark towel or old t-shirt
- Good Lighting
- A mirror
- Petroleum jelly
- Comb or thick bristled brush
- A spray bottle
-
Step 1
Shampoo hair with a ph balanced shampoo. The easiest and cheapest will be Suaves Daily Clarifying Shampoo
-
Step 2
Shake the Manic Panic as color may have separated or settled on the bottom. Apply petroleum jelly to hairline on forehead, behind ears and on the back of your neck
-
Step 3
Put a dark towel around your neck and over shoulders to catch any color or wear an old t-shirt. Put on your gloves. You can find gloves at your local Walmart or Sally Beauty Supply. I prefer to go to Sally's and get the purple gloves as they hold up better and run about $2.50.
-
Step 4
Pour Manic Panic into a coloring bowl, or just a plastic bowl you have no attachment to. (Never use a metal when working with chemicals.) Or if you prefer, just reach into jar when color is needed. If hair starts to dry use the spray bottle to wet it again.
-
Step 5
Part hair in the center if possible. Apply color to your roots first working the color down to about your ears and halfway down the back, slightly massaging color in from the front of your head to the back. Starting in the front grab hair in sections, (about a handful) and run color straight down to tips. You may also apply as if putting hair into a ponytail. Once your hair is saturated it will be frothy. Run a comb or thick bristled brush through hair to distribute color evenly. Brush and/or comb will rinse out easily.
-
Step 6
You may put your hair in a bun or twist it and secure with a plastic hair claw. Wait 15-30 mintes for color to set, for bolder effects wait 30-45 minutes as dye usually times out after 45 minutes. Heat may also be used to intensify color.
-
Step 7
Rinse hair with lukewarm water, (not too hot, not too cold) until water runs clear. For added shine and softness run hair under a cold tap when finishing. Use your dark towel to remove petroleum. If dye is where you don't want it (on skin) use rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball or rag to remove. Style and dry as usual, and enjoy your new color.
