A skills-based resume, also known as a functional resume is an option for job seekers who have gaps in employment, have had many jobs in a short period of time or are switching careers. This type of format emphasizes the skills you've obtained from educational experiences, past jobs and even volunteer experiences. Lead your resume with grouped categories of skills instead of a chronological history of work.

Provide a summary of qualifications at the top of the resume that are most relevant to the position for which you are applying.

Group your skills by category and provide a heading for each group of skills. For example, you might have category for Computer Programming" experience or "Sales and Marketing" experience. Under each heading, describe your accomplishments with each skill. Provide details about where you used the skill and how you used it. List the jobs along with your title, place of employment and dates of employment for each skill and accomplishment.
