How to Remove Glue on Formica

Samantha Volz

Homeowners may choose Formica countertops for their looks or their usability. Professional installers have a variety of ways to install Formica into your home; one of these is with a glue or adhesive.

If excess glue leaks between the joints or spilled onto the countertop, or if another type of glue has created a stain, remove it from the Formica using solvents to help dissolve the bond.

  1. Dampen a soft, cotton cloth with warm water mixed with mild dish detergent. Wipe the Formica surface clean with this cloth to remove surface dust and dirt that can change the way adhesive solvents work.

  2. Rinse the area with a clean cloth soaked in warm water. Do not splash or soak the Formica surface, as excessive water can leak through seams and cause swelling. Dry the surface completely with a clean, soft towel before continuing.

  3. Dampen a clean, soft cloth with adhesive solvent. Formica creates brand-name solvents for just this purpose; you can also use specialized glue solvents or household products such as mineral spirits or rubbing alcohol.

  4. Rub the glued area with the solvent-dampened rag. Apply more solvent if necessary to remove the glue. Scrape away loosened glue with a plastic scraper if necessary to aid in the cleaning process. Continue until all glue is removed.

  5. Rinse the area with a water-dampened rag to remove residual solvent. Wash again with water and dish detergent, and rinse again with water; you must remove all solvent before using the area for cooking or eating. Dry the area thoroughly with a soft towel.

  6. Tip

Use as little solvent as possible; extra solvent can leak into the Formica and damage the laminate surface. Read all directions and warnings on your chosen solvent product to be sure it is safe for use on laminate.

    Warning

If you use a scraper, use only a plastic one; metal or other types of scraper can damage the laminate surface.
