How to Place Glass Tubing in a Rubber Stopper

Rubber stoppers are useful tools to have in conjunction with glass tubing. The scientific and medical communities often make use of these items where containment of liquids is necessary. Glass artists use these tools to more easily blow glass at a table-top torch. Others may adapt these materials for other projects around the house, such as setting up hummingbird feeders. Whatever the need, learning how to work with these materials safely will keep you from damaging the materials or hurting yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the end of the tube going into the stopper for any sharp edges. If you find any, gently use sandpaper to lightly buff out these rough spots and prevent cuts in the rubber.

    • 2

Put on a pair of gloves and grip the glass tube. The gloves protect against cuts in the event that any breakage occurs.

    • 3

Use water to wet the end of the tubing going into the stopper. The water deters any unnecessary friction so that it is easier to slide the glass into the rubber.

    • 4

Hold the stopper firmly in your free hand and gently push the glass tube inside the hole of the rubber. Wiggle the glass back and forth to allow more length of the tube to go in until the end protrudes through the back of the stopper.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never force the glass into the stopper because it can break.
