Clear out old files by doing a disk cleanup on your computer. Do this by clicking the Start button on the lower left hand side of your screen, choosing "All Programs," selecting "Accessories," then "System Tools" and finally selecting "Disk Cleanup."

Conduct a disk defragmentation to bring your files back together for faster access. Click the Start button on your screen, go to "All Programs," click "Accessories," then "System Tools" and then "Disk Defragmenter."

Detect and isolate any bad sectors on your computer hard drive to speed up performance. Click the Start button on your screen, go to My Computer, choose the hard disk you want (C or D) by right-clicking with your mouse on the correct drive, select "Properties," then "Tools," select "Check now" and then select "Scan for bad sectors" and press "Start."

Clear out old search histories and cookies that slow down your computer by selecting the Tools menu at the top right of your Internet Explorer (Windows) screen. Choose Internet Options, select "Delete" in the Browsing History and then click on the "Delete" button.
